Motorcycle Fuel Injection Service And Repairs

Dirty or clogged fuel injectors and fuel filters can degrade your motorcycles performance and economy. A plugged fuel filter can lower your fuel pressure leading to poor performance and possible engine damage. Plugged injectors can do the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fuel Injection FAQ (frequently asked questions)

What is fuel injection?

Fuel injection is a way of metering fuel the engine requires during normal operation. Various engine speeds, loads and operating temperatures require different air fuel mixtures to provide best power. Unlike traditional carburetors which use engine vacuum to pull the needed fuel into the engine, fuel injection uses a pressurized spray that is measured out precisely by a computer. The computer reads various parameters from the engine such as RPM, temperature, air density and throttle opening to meter out the exact amount of fuel required for best performance.

What can go wrong in a fuel injection system?

There are various sensors, a computer, a fuel delivery pump, servo motors and wiring that can malfunction causing a partial or total failure of the system.

What happens if I have a fuel injection part malfunction?

Depending on what it is, some fuel injection systems can bypass malfunctioning sensors and put the system in limp home mode. Such modes are designed to keep the engine going but may hamper performance and economy severely. Some malfunctions cannot be bypassed and the system quits working all together. A total failure could be a dead injector, a burned out computer (ECU module) or a bad fuel pump. If such devices did fail, the motorcycle would fail to run.

There is a light on my meters that reads FI and it is on. What is wrong?

The FI light means fault indicator. This means the fuel injection computer has detected a fault and has put the bike in limp home mode or it is a non critical fault. The computer has stored a fault code(s) and it will need to be translated to determine the problem. A technician will need to put the motorcycle into diagnostic mode to read the code and repair the problem.

My motorcycle does not want to run but there is no FI light. Can it still be a problem with my fuel injection system?

Yes. certain things cannot be logged by the computer. And if the computer is at fault, then the computer cannot tell you anything. Items such as spark plugs, fuel pressure, certain relays and fuel condition cannot be monitored by the ECU( engine control unit or for better terms the central computer). These items must be checked by manual troubleshooting and testing.

What are some tell tale signs of fuel injection problems?

Misfires, sluggish acceleration, poor idle, erratic engine speeds, hard to start or no start issues can all be symptoms of fuel injection problems. Unfortunately many other problems can also have these same symptoms. Diagnostic computers can rule out or detect problems with your fuel injection system to determine the real cause of running issues.
