Motorcycle/ATV/Scooter HID (High Intensity Discharge) Lighting Upgrades
Nothing helps night driving more than bright well distributed light on the road. It is proven that the best color temprature for light that provides the most usable light. Natural sunlight is around 4300-4500 kelvin in color temprature. Ordinary halogen bulbs produce color temopratures around 3800K which is a dim yellowish color.
HID lighing uses an electric arc fired through a gas filled globe to produce white intense light that looks light sunlight hitting the road and it does so consuming less energy than a standard halogen bulb.
HID lighing systems use a ballast to control the light much like how a fluroesent tube works. Because there is no filament like a standard light bulb, these HID systems last longer in high vibration applications such as motorcycles.
HID lighting is available in different color tempratures as well (see charts on the right)ranging from 3500k (golden yellow) to 10,000k (violet) The slight tint they give off can give your motorcycle a custom look but it does not throw down any usable light. The color spectrum from golden yellow to bright white is usable light. Blue to violet is a very slow moving spectrum and does not make for great visablility since much of this light gets filtered reflecting off objects.
When choosing an HID lighting system for your motorcycle, it is sugested to go with 4300-5000k color temp. 5000k has a slight blue hint to it but still provides very useable lighting. 4300-4500 is the best as it is closest to natural sunlight.
SSU Motorcycle service sells HID conversion kits for just about every motorcycle. We offer professional installation of every kit with a lifetime warranty on the installation. Most kits carry a 1 year warranty of the actual product itself. |
